Evaluation question seven: Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in progression from it to the full product?

We feel that our preliminary task was a success, and that overall we learnt a great deal from it. The aim of the task was to gain a better understanding of the filming and editing process, especially in regards to continuity, match on action, the 180 degree rule and "shot reverse" sequences- essentially, learning to effectively express the narrative.
 In the filming process, we learned just how important continuity is: here, we had left this chair out of place from a previous cut. Because the footage we needed to use following this had been filmed prior to that particular cut, there was a continuity error; and the resultant footage was jarring to watch and appeared unprofessional- thus we had the refilm the footage, this time making sure that the prop was in the right place and that continuity was upheld.

 We had a similar experience with match on action;

Evaluation question five: how will you attract/address your audience?

We will attract our audience through advertising. We looked at forms of advertising, that wouldn't interfere with our budget. So to advertise, we will put previews in cinemas, before and after films that are similar to our products and films that attract the same types of audience we are looking for. We will also advertise through social networking sites such as facebook and twitter regularly. We also looked at producing posters that we will place mainly around the city centre and uni campuses and billboards that will also be placed around the city centre as most of our audience visit the city centre as least 2times a week and this type of audience usually lives in or around uni campuses.

Evaluation question four: Who would be the audience for your media product?

According to bbfc regulations, certificate 18
 was the most appropriate choice.

When developing our product, we first had  to research into the thriller genre in order for us to be able to  create a product that would appeal to the correct target audience. We decided that our product would be a psychological thriller which would be very intellectually challenging. After looking at a few statistics, we decided that our target audience would be people who are 18 years of age or older. This group of people are most likely to be well educated and possibly more drawn towards the intellectually challenging thrillers.

As they are well educated the psychological plot would being interesting and entertaining for them. We also chose this audience because they have well paying jobs and therefore are more willing and likely to pay to watch our product in cinemas this rating was perfect for our product as there is excessive taboo language and constant violence which would be unsuitable for certain viewers.

Evaluation question three: What kind of media institution might distribute your product and why?

Additionally, New Line works in coordination with Warner Brothers to distribute the films, and with a revenue of 12 billion US$ they would have not only the financial means but also the prestige and recognition of working with a large multi-subsidary company would mean that the distribution of our film would be more effective and more widespread.

In terms of distribution we felt New Line Cinema would be an appropriate choice. The company has produced many successful works of the thriller genre including one of our key influences "se7en"; which would allow for greater audience recognition and a greater status. This company which recently began to act as a division of time Warner is notable for its consistently high profits from the horror/thriller genre, with films such as snakes on a plane (gross US$62,022,014), The butterfly effect (gross US$ $96,060,858) and Se7en, which had a $327,311,859

Evaluation question two:How does our media product represent a particular social group?

We think our film represents social groups such as middle class working women as both of the detectives are females. Typically in most thriller films, detectives are usually men for example, David Miller and Detective William Somerset who were the detective in Seven. The fact that the villian is unidentified and faceless in itself presents a form of representation: stereotypically you may expect for the villian in a thriller to be male, with characters such as Kevin Spacey as the killer in Seven, Anothony Hopkins as the Hannibal Lecter and the character of the husband, Clyde Shelton, from Law abiding citizen. However, by not identifying any details of the killer and selectively using close up which do not imply or reveal any details that could identify gender, age nor ethnicity of the killer we have created a villian who is beyond such conventions: thus representing evil as being something which is not specific, and unbound by social groups. Evil is nameless, faceless and independent of any social group.
